Aluminum Atoms Spin Round the World
Republic Foil and Dexmet form part of an interesting story of global commerce. Alba of Bahrain smelts the aluminum from bauxite mined in Australia. From Alba, aluminum ingots go to Garmco in Bahrain, Republic Foil’s parent company. Garmco rolls ingots into coils that are supplied to Republic Foil to make into foil. Dexmet in Connecticut, buys Republic Foil material, and processes it into expanded metal. Then this expanded metal material is slit and supplied to a German company that makes rechargeable Lithium batteries. From Germany, the batteries go to China to be assembled into iPods for sale all over the world. The aluminum atoms travel 1.5 times around the world from the ground to your iPod.
